SUMMARY:An Equitable Rebound for People of Colour and Newcomers - Nova Scotia
DESCRIPTION:Event Information\nCOVID-19 has turned work life upside down. The past two years have not been kind\, and work situations have changed for almost everyone. We all have our own work stories\, including ups and downs\, work-from-home struggles\, and even the halting of businesses and loss of jobs. There are countless ways in which each of our work journeys may not have gone as expected. \nJoin ICTC on August 16th at 5:30 pm and connect with fellow Nova Scotia residents as we discuss overcoming work barriers and making a professional rebound. \nThis meetup is for Black Canadians\, People of Colour\, and Newcomers to share experiences over the last two years\, discuss needs and challenges\, and hear about career advancement and growth pathways. \n*A $20 Amazon gift card will be provided as an honorarium to participants who actively engage in this event’s discussion. \nLet’s kick off a more equitable rebound!\nWhat to expect: An open session where participants can propose topics they are interested in and discuss them with other people in similar situations. We will also invite community partners (such as organizations serving Black Canadians\, People of Colour\, and Newcomers) who may have advice or resources for participants. \nLocation: Volta – 1505 Barrington Street\, Unit 100\, Halifax\, NS\, B3J 3K5\, Canada \nOur thanks to attendees: The event is catered (dinner is on us!)\, and a raffle will take place for all participants. We also will maintain a list of anyone who is interested in hearing about how the research progresses and share any articles about the research with everyone. Identities will not be shared. \nWho is involved? The Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) is a non-profit\, non-government organization. We do public interest research and we offer training and subsidy programs for people interested in careers in technology. \nCommunity Partners: Thank you to Tribe Network\, One North End\, and Volta for helping make this meetup a success. \nIf you are a university student\, we offer co-op funding for tech-related placements. \nIf you are a newcomer to Canada\, we offer pre- and post-arrival programs for starting or continuing a career in technology.

SUMMARY:Beyond accessibility: Meaningful inclusion in citizen experiences
DESCRIPTION:Details \nThis month\, we continue on from last month’s focus in the area of accessibility and inclusion. \nJoin us on Wednesday\, September 28th as we listen and learn from Beth Fox\, Strategic Engagement Advisor with the Canadian Digital Service. \nMany UX and service design professionals find themselves advocating for their users within their product teams\, and their larger organizations. Increasingly\, we’re being asked to help improve not just usability\, but also accessibility in experiences. In this talk\, Beth encourages us to stretch beyond what we might think of as accessible by providing real-world examples of how inclusion (or a lack of it) impacts all facets of services and design. \nBeth Fox is a public servant with over a decade of bringing user experience and service design skills to public service challenges. As a founding member of the Nova Scotia Digital Service (NSDS)\, Beth spent years as a user researcher and service designer\, advocating for the people who use government services. In her work at the province\, she was an advocate for how human-centered design improves the delivery of services. A long-time collaborator across boundaries\, Beth recently made the move from the provincial to the federal public service. This summer she joined the Canadian Digital Service (CDS) as a strategic engagement advisor. She continues to champion inclusive approaches to how the government can better serve everybody. \nConnect with her via: Twitter & Linkedin \nThere will be time for some Q&A and networking. This is a FREE event thanks to our friends at Volta and ResMed. \nThe meetup will take place in Volta’s mezzanine floor classroom. The classroom is a bit tricky to access at the moment due to ongoing building renovations\, so here are some tips to get there safely (some photos are on the event album as well): \nEnter the building through the doors at the corner of Salter and Barrington Streets.\nOnce inside\, proceed down the hallway until you see a set of elevators on the far end.\nIn the elevators\, choose L for Lobby. Sign in with security at the lobby.\nTransfer to a second set of elevators just down the hall in the lobby. Choose M for Mezzanine.\nOn the mezzanine floor\, proceed down the hall until you see the classroom.\nWe look forward to seeing everyone! ?
