The Nova Scotia Career Development Association (NSCDA)

The Nova Scotia Career Development Association (NSCDA)

Strength and Support for Career Developers
The Nova Scotia Career Development Association (NSCDA) is a not-for-profit professional organization with approximately 450 members from across the province. The NSCDA’s goal is to strengthen the role of the career development profession within Nova Scotia by providing both guidance and the tools to ensure members can maximize their potential.

NSCDA members include Career Development Practitioners (CDPs), Certified Career Development Practitioners (CCDPs), and people working within the field of career development using a variety of other titles that reflect their positions.

    What Do Career Developers Do?
You will find NSCDA members assisting people with any number of career development activities. Job searches and connecting people to programs that will expand their career options through training or education are just two of the ways our members support their clients. The role of the career developer can also include helping employers recruit, manage, and develop talent to maintain their productivity. People working in the career development field are not sitting passively behind a desk. They’re often out in the community, meeting with stakeholders, potential mentors, small businesses and program developers, seeking mutually beneficial solutions for both employers and job seekers. NSCDA members work in a variety of settings providing expert career and employment services to a diverse clientele:

    • Nova Scotia Works Centres
    • Private Employment Centres
    • Municipal, Provincial, and Federal Government Departments
    • Profit, Non-Profit, and Not-for-Profit Organizations
    • Indigenous Organizations
    • Newcomer, Settlement, and Immigration Agencies
    • Youth Organizations
    • Rehabilitation Centres and Associations
    • Grade Schools, Colleges, and Universities
    • Human Resources Departments

    Certification
One of the main functions of the NSCDA is the certification of CDPs. The certification program was introduced in 2014.

RPL-Based Certification Model Unique in Canada
The NSCDA realizes that people come to the field of career development through many paths. To accommodate and recognize all the skills a career developer has, we have developed a competency-based, recognition of prior learning (RPL)-based certification model. So no matter what brought you to career development, it’s your knowledge and experience that matters, whether or not you have a degree or diploma.

    Professional Development
The NSCDA provides career development and training opportunities for career practitioners using a variety of delivery methods, including face-to-face seminars, webinars, and self-study opportunities.

Training events occur throughout the year across the province. Topics include Case Management, Diversity and Inclusion, Engaging Employers, Problem Solving, Mental Health Strategies, Change Management, Problem Solving, Leadership Development, Facilitation Skills and more.

    Conference
There is power in connecting. That’s why the NSCDA’s annual conference is such a highly anticipated event for members and other professionals within the NS career development community. Hundreds of delegates share in this opportunity to renew their energies and focus, network with colleagues, discuss issues, explore fresh ideas, and expand their skillsets.
